I always advocate that an MVP doesn't always need to be an actual product or landing page. It could be a sale, purchase order or letter of intent.

To plan or build? A great question! Too much of either can de-rail momentum on a project, both are required for a successful outcome.
Joel summarises excellently by reminding that you can't learn by planning. Get it out there and release into the real world, ship often! Usage and data can often invalidate even the most well thought out plans.
